Vent field in Pescadero Basin: things to think about

A hydrothermal vent site was recently discovered at a 3700 m deep site in Pescadero Basin (Gulf of California). Here is some exciting footage provided by MBARI and our robotic buddy ROV Doc Ricketts. Remarkably, despite being close to Alarcon Ridge site, the Pescadero vents have distinguishable different biologic communities living of the hydrothermal fluids. This brings food for thought for reconsidering many previous assumptions not only on the geochemistry of this basin, but also on the colonization speed of extremophile chemosynthetic marine habitats.
